Speedup in-game grinding with the high-speed screen display: What’s the difference between 60Hz, 144Hz, and 240Hz refresh rate?

How is a Video Created?

The animation in videos, TVs, movies, and even games, whether 2D or 3D, are all made by consecutive display of independent and still but slightly different images. The persistence of vision is what allows the human eyes to form these slightly different frames with intervals to result in continuous motion. The more images the human eye sees per second, the smoother the video motion we experience.

Animation is created by a series of consecutive still images.

The Higher the Refresh Rate the Better

Refresh rate represents the number of frames that appear/update on a display per second. For example, 60Hz means that 60 images can be displayed per second, while 120Hz indicates 120 images. Since most of the game images have no motion blur, the lower the update rate a screen has, the higher the chance of image flicker. The display screen refresh frequency is constantly undergoing technology breakthroughs, from 60Hz to 120Hz, 144Hz, 240Hz, and even up to 300Hz. At the present stage, a 144Hz is the most popular specification on the market, while high-end laptops can reach 240Hz or 300Hz. Though it is difficult for a game to achieve such a high refresh rate due to heavy performance requirements, a higher rate can still provide users with a better and smoother visual motion experience.

The Close Correlation between Frame Rate and Graphics Card Performance

The frame rate can be understood as the number of frames per second (Frames per Second, FPS) rendered/outputted by the graphics. For online multiplayer shooting or action games, 120~144 FPS is the basic requirement for a smooth image flow. It may be difficult for your average Joe to distinguish between displays that are higher than 144 fps; but that split-second difference might just be the key in beating your opponent.

Players are able to stay ahead of the game when the system latency is reduced thanks to high refresh rate and high FPS.

The refresh rate and frame rate are complementary and indispensable. If the two are inconsistent, the player may feel the tearing or delay of the video. For example, a 60Hz screen can display 60 images per second, so it reuses the same images of a 30fps video to fill up the gap which can cause lag or a slight pause of a motion. On the contrary, using a 60Hz screen to display a 144~240 FPS game title is a waste of high-end display screen as the display screen doesn’t match great performance of the graphics card, thereby impacting gaming experience.

The most important feature that high refresh rate and high frame rate picture can offer players, is to effectively reduce system latency on the display screen after input from mouse movement, click firing, and keyboard buttons. The picture above illustrates the differences between different refresh rates. There’s a greater opportunity to win victory with a reduction of the system latency since the screen can display the enemy image more quickly, allowing a player to stay ahead of the game.
